D. Whittington has never exactly taken the straight road through life.

A native of Atlanta, D. served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot before going on to a life and career that would take him in more directions than he probably could have imagined. He has worked as a corporate pilot, master plumber and project manager, lived nearly twenty years in Alaska, and spent years exploring the country by RV.

Aviation and adventure have always been part of his story. Over the years, D. flew helicopters, competed in hang gliding and flew hot air balloons. Those experiences took him to some remarkable places and gave him more than a few stories about close calls, unexpected turns and what he likes to call his “nine lives.”

His love of storytelling started with his father, Paul, who filled his childhood with funny stories. D. eventually began writing down his own adventures, observations and thoughts about life. For more than a decade, he wrote as Icewind on Icewind’s Ramblings, sharing stories about Alaska, travel, people, humor and the oddities of everyday life. His writing has also appeared in specialty publications, including stories about hang gliding and articles related to his professional trades.

Traveling Life’s Highways began as another chapter in that journey, documenting life on the road and seeing America through the eyes of a veteran. Over time, it has grown into something broader.

Today, this is where D.’s stories come together. Alaska. Aviation. Travel. Veterans. Friendship. Humor. Life lessons. A few close calls. And whatever interesting turn happens to come next.

At its heart, Traveling Life’s Highways is simply D. doing what he has always done: paying attention to life, collecting the stories, and sharing a few of them along the way.
